Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, faculty, staff, and students,
It is with great pleasure and honor that I stand before you today to deliver the inaugural lecture of the 1994-1995 academic year at the University of Haifa.
The theme of my lecture is "Educating Zion." I have chosen this topic because I believe that education is essential to the future of the Jewish people and the State of Israel.
The Jewish people have always placed a high value on education. In the Torah, we are commanded to "teach your children and your children's children" (Deuteronomy 4:9). This commandment has been interpreted by our sages to mean that we must provide our children with a well-rounded education that includes both secular and religious knowledge.
Throughout our history, the Jewish people have established schools and universities wherever they have settled. These institutions have played a vital role in preserving our culture and tradition and in preparing our people for the challenges of the modern world.
The State of Israel was founded on the principle that every Jew has the right to a quality education. The Israeli government has established a comprehensive system of public education that is open to all citizens, regardless of their religion or ethnic origin.
The University of Haifa is a leading institution of higher learning in Israel. Our university is committed to providing our students with a world-class education that will prepare them for success in their careers and in life.
The University of Haifa is also committed to playing a leading role in the development of the State of Israel. Our faculty and students are engaged in cutting-edge research that is addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing our society.
I believe that the University of Haifa is well-positioned to play a key role in educating the next generation of Jewish leaders. Our university has a strong tradition of academic excellence and a commitment to social justice.
I am confident that the students who graduate from the University of Haifa will be well-equipped to lead the Jewish people and the State of Israel into the 21st century.
In the words of the prophet Isaiah, "The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; those who live in a land of deep darkness, on them light will shine" (Isaiah 9:2).
I believe that the University of Haifa is a beacon of light in the darkness. Our university is a place where students can learn, grow, and develop into the leaders of tomorrow.
I am proud to be a part of the University of Haifa community. I am confident that our university will continue to play a vital role in the education of the Jewish people and the development of the State of Israel.
Thank you.
The Importance of Education in the Jewish Tradition
As I mentioned earlier, the Jewish people have always placed a high value on education. This is reflected in the fact that the Torah commands us to "teach your children and your children's children" (Deuteronomy 4:9).
This commandment has been interpreted by our sages to mean that we must provide our children with a well-rounded education that includes both secular and religious knowledge.
The Talmud, the central text of Rabbinic Judaism, contains numerous passages that emphasize the importance of education. For example, the Talmud states that "a person who does not teach his son a trade is like one who buries him alive" (Kiddushin 29a).
The Talmud also states that "a father is obligated to teach his son Torah, a trade, and how to swim" (Kiddushin 30a).
These passages from the Talmud make it clear that the Jewish people have always believed that education is essential for the well-being of individuals and the community as a whole.
The Role of the University in Educating the Next Generation of Jewish Leaders
