The Strike
The strike began on January 11, 1912, when 25,000 textile workers in Lawrence walked off the job. The workers were demanding a 15% pay increase, a 54-hour work week, and the right to organize. The mill owners refused to meet the workers' demands, and the strike quickly turned violent.
On January 29, 1912, a group of strikers clashed with police. Two strikers were killed and several others were injured. The violence only served to galvanize the strikers, and they continued to picket the mills and hold rallies.
On February 24, 1912, the mill owners finally agreed to meet the workers' demands. The strike was over, and the workers had won a major victory.
The Legacy of the Strike
The Bread and Roses Strike was a watershed moment in the American labor movement. It showed that workers could win significant concessions from their employers if they were willing to stand together and fight. The strike also helped to raise awareness of the plight of immigrant workers in the United States.
The legacy of the Bread and Roses Strike continues to inspire labor activists today. The strike is a reminder that workers can achieve great things when they are united and determined.
