The Plot

The play opens with a group of fairies gathered in a forest outside of Athens. The fairies are preparing for the wedding of their queen, Titania, and Oberon, the king of the fairies. However, Oberon is angry with Titania because she has refused to give him a changeling child. Oberon decides to play a trick on Titania by using a magic potion to make her fall in love with the first creature she sees.

Meanwhile, four young lovers, Demetrius, Lysander, Hermia, and Helena, are lost in the forest. Demetrius is in love with Hermia, but Hermia is in love with Lysander. Helena is in love with Demetrius, but Demetrius does not love her back. Oberon takes pity on Helena and uses his magic potion to make Demetrius fall in love with her.

The magic potion causes all sorts of chaos in the forest. Demetrius falls in love with Helena, but Hermia still loves Lysander. Lysander falls in love with Titania, but Titania still loves Oberon. The fairies play tricks on the lovers, and the lovers become confused and lost.

Eventually, Oberon realizes that he has caused too much chaos with his magic potion. He uses his magic to restore the lovers to their original loves. The play ends with the four lovers reunited and married.
